About the band

The Rocky Mountain Pipe Band (RMPB) has established itself as Alberta’s premier pipe band, being both a musical and competitive leader. The RMPB has won the North American Championships, the Mid-America Championships, the BC Pipers Annual Gathering, the Northern Canadian Championships, consecutive Alberta Provincial Championships and many local contests closer to home. The band wears the distinctive Isle of Skye tartan, and is under the leadership of Pipe-Major Sean Somers and Leading-Drummer Ian Aastrom.

Based in Calgary, AB, the RMPB is a Grade 2 band comprised of some of the most talented and skilled musicians in the province. Current band members have won Provincial, Canadian, North American and even World Championships! Since its inception in 1998, the band has regularly competed at games throughout North America, and performs at many local events and functions in the Calgary area.

The band is the official pipe band of the “275 Forest Lawn Legion”, which it also proudly calls home. The 275 Branch (located at 755 40th Street SE in Calgary, AB), also serves as the band’s practice facility. The band practices Thursdays and Sundays, and guests are always welcome to stop by for a listen and a visit!

The RMPB membership is made up of an odd and eclectic mix of age, vocation and background. With members originally hailing from every corner of the country, the band is made up of students, salespeople, civil engineers, skilled trades, landscapers, civil servants and other working professionals employed in Alberta’s oil and gas industry. Despite the seemingly odd mix of diversity and personalities, the band makes it work. We’re all equals in the circle!
